DO WE NEED AUSTRALIA DAY?

By Monica Attard

January 21, 2013

It’s not long now until Australia Day.

On that day, some will show their love of Australia by flying the Australian flag atop their cars. Or by draping the flag over their shoulders to parade on beaches, beer in hand. Others will quietly celebrate whatever it is that we think we are when we so publicly and proudly declare ourselves Australian.

Love of this country and nationalism are deliberately fused together on this day – to set an example of how it is we ought to live in this multicultural nation – as Australians! We will be told by politicians of all persuasion that we peacefully co-exist because we all “share” something.

What does “being an Australian” mean to you? Image via waltzingmorethanmatilda.com.

What is extraordinary is that over the years, Australia Day has cemented the notion that there is some quintessential characteristic or set of characteristics that we share that make us all Australian. And even more extraordinary, that we share it simply because we happen to have been born here or happened to have arrived here.

What this is has changed over the years. When I was growing up in 1970s Sydney, even if you were born here, you were Australian only if (a) your parents were born here and (b) you didn’t look Mediterranean. I ticked neither box.

Though waves of Vietnamese immigration, followed by Lebanese immigration, followed by waves of asylum seekers have dimmed this peculiarly 1970s definition of Australia, the notion remains that there is something identifiable which – if subscribed to or accepted – makes you somehow, magically, Australian, and the same as everyone else.

And it’s not mere citizenship of the type, which can be bestowed upon anyone who meets certain government set criteria.

Many have tried to define it, this “Australian-ness”.

Some say it is egalitarianism – that we all have the right to work and live as well as the next bloke (or sheila). Some say it is mateship – that we are there, barracking for or defending each other when the chips are down. Some say it is loving cricket, or loving tennis, or playing rugby, or bagging those who bag us, or loving fish and chips on the beach, or just not being – generally speaking – a douchebag.

Some say you can feel this thing that makes us Australian whether you are Muslim, Hindu, Christian, Jew, black, white, or somewhere in between. Watch this video for evidence of how we now flatten out what it “means to be Australian”.

But in the absence of an absolute definition with which all of us can identify, celebrating sameness when so many of us are so different can surely serve only to make many people feel more different and less like the rest of the country in its Australianness, and therefore less accepted.

The whole “we are all Australian” thing can feel like little more than the jingoism of nationalism on steroids on Australia Day. And that can so quickly and so easily turn very ugly.

Remember those horrific years of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation and John Howard’s “we will decide who comes to this country and under what circumstances” time as PM?

Remember Cronulla in 2005 when mobs of rioting angry, young, Anglo youth rounded up on young, angry, non Anglo youth – throwing bottles at them as they carried signs reading “F*ck off Lebs” and “ We grew here, you flew here”? Relations between Anglo and non-Anglo Sydneysiders still haven’t returned to pre-Cronulla normal.

A violent scene from the 2005 Cronulla riots. Photo via abc.net.au.

Loving the place where you live is a great thing. But lest we forget that it can be and indeed, has been abused to produce behaviour that is most dishonourable. Cronulla is but one example.

There are, for example, the decades we insisted on the notion of terra nullius followed by our refusal to apologise to indigenous Australia for the sins of the past. To do otherwise – on either count – would have been to dishonour the idea of this being “our” country, possessed by us (and no-one before us) in a nationalistic fervour that could be whipped up at whim. It would have been to discount the idea that this is our country where we can institute whatever policy we deem necessary, no matter how inhumane, to maintain our idea of law and order.

And there’s our refusal to see the suffering of asylum seekers and open our national doors for pretty much the same reasons as above: this is OUR country, not theirs. We decide who gets to live here.

As the philosopher Raimond Gaita has said in the past, love of country often degenerates. And it can often degenerate into something we may not like or even have control over. It can often encourage people to think its okay to say “we” in a way that excludes others.

It can also often degenerate into nationalistic jingoism peddled by politicians for their own political purposes.

We can however, enjoy the day off knowing that the public holiday is, indeed, the one thing we all have in common.

What does Australia Day mean to you?

Is Your Hatred Based on Lies?

Interest-free home loans for asylum seekers? Muslims responsible for majority of rape? Higher Centrelink payments for refugees? Wow! How come the mainstream media aren’t jumping on all of these stories?

Sandra Rogic aka Sandy Mitchell isn’t known for her intelligence. But when she posted these porkies on a public Facebook page the other day, we thought it only appropriate that we respond with some facts.

Myth:

Fact:

Health Care:

The Australian Medical Association affirms that those who are seeking, or who have been granted, asylum within Australia have the right to receive appropriate medical care without discrimination, regardless of citizenship, visa status, or ability to pay. Like all seeking health care, asylum seekers and refugees in Australia should be treated with compassion, respect, and dignity.

The AMA makes the following observations and recommendations in relation to the health care of asylum seekers and refugees:

Health and Welfare of Asylum Seekers and Refugees

1. In addition to suffering the same health problems as the general population, asylum seekers and refugees are at particular risk from a range of conditions including psychological disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, and the physical effects of persecution and torture. They may also often suffer the effects of poor dental hygiene, poor nutrition and diet, and infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, which may be more common in their countries of origin.

2. To determine their specific health needs, all asylum seekers and refugees should undergo comprehensive and timely health assessments in a culturally appropriate manner by suitably trained medical practitioners as part of a primary health care team. This assessment will be used to establish ongoing care.

3. All asylum seekers and refugees should have access to the same level of health care as all Australian citizens. In addition, it should be ensured that their special needs, including cultural, linguistic, and health-related, are addressed.

Crime Rate Increase?

Interestingly and as a side note, Bankstown (in Sydney) is known for having the highest concentration of Muslims in Australia. Yet the crime rate there is below the state average, and falling.

Interest Free Home Loans?

No. Here are some no-interest loans that are available to all Australians though:

Myth:

Fact:

“The effect of the attitude of suspicion adopted by many Australians unfortunately tends to be cumulative in its effect where conscious effort is not made to arrest it. A “community attitude” is adopted which is very difficult for individuals to break through. This “community attitude” tends unfortunately to be fostered, albeit unconsciously, by the Press. If an Australian commits a misdemeanour, responsibility for it is attributed to him individually. If a migrant commits a similar misdemeanour it is usually reported in such a way that the fact that he is a migrant, rather than the crime itself, is featured and responsibility for the offence is thus shared by the whole migrant population.”

(Commonwealth Immigration Advisory Council 1952. Report of Committee Established to Investigate Conduct of Migrants.)

Screen Shot 2013-01-22 at 8.46.53 AM

“News about crimes by migrants creates concern, often unfounded, and tends to disadvantage groups that show higher than average involvement in crime. These concerns can often lead to some outlandish claims that some migrant groups are criminal by nature, or that criminals are entering Australia and our controls may not be working. There is no evidence to indicate that criminals are entering Australia by flouting immigration laws and controls. It is also not possible to say who among the overseas-born, i.e. immigrants, temporary residents, tourists, asylum seekers, or illegal immigrants are arrested for crimes.”

“After a spate of sexual assaults on women in south-western Sydney in 2000, many of them carried out by young Lebanese-Australian males, Labor Premier Bob Carr condemned the assertion that the criminal behaviour and misogynist attitudes of these young men were shaped by their experience of growing up in Australia, and not by their ethnic background. Yet figures from the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research show that gang rapes are more common in country NSW than anywhere in Sydney.”

(Source)

A 1998 study into juvenile crime by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research found that “ethnicity was, in general, not related to participation in crime amongst NSW secondary students. In fact where we found any relationship between ethnicity and participation in crime it indicated that students from an ethnic background had lower rates of participation in crime.”

Myth:

screen-shot-2013-01-20-at-10-25-49-pm.png

Fact:

A refugee who has permanent residency in Australia receives exactly the same social security benefits as any Australian-born person in the same circumstances. Refugees apply for social security through Centrelink like everyone else and are assessed for the different payment options in the same way as everyone else. There are no separate Centrelink allowances that one can receive simply by virtue of being a refugee.

Centrelink payments are calculated at exactly the same rate for both refugees and non-refugees. A single person with no dependent children applying for Special Benefit or the Newstart Allowance (whether or not he or she is a refugee) will receive $489.70 per fortnight, whereas a single person on an Age Pension payment will receive a fortnightly payment of $695.30. A single age pensioner therefore receives over $200.00 more per fortnight more than a single refugee (or a single Australian-born person) who qualifies for Special Benefit or Newstart. Australian citizens and permanent residents with dependent children on lower to middle incomes (including refugees) may also be eligible to receive Family Tax Benefits or Parenting Payments. However, none of these allowances are paid at a higher rate than the single age pension.14

Asylum seekers are not entitled to the same forms of financial support as citizens or permanent residents. The Asylum Seeker Assistance (ASA) Scheme provides assistance to some eligible asylum seekers who are in the process of having their refugee status determined. The ASA Scheme offers income support to cover basic living expenses, at a rate below Centrelink benefits.

Bad luck Sandra Rogic. You’re still full of shit.

We have never denied that racism is a two-way street and here is some evidence to confirm it:

Rape Culture Seeps Into Spectrum’s Cocktail Menu

As you may have noticed above, Spectrum Daiquiri Bar in Brisbane has a couple of drinks on its menu that are clearly offensive, particularly to women. Calling a drink a ‘slut’ because it ‘goes down well’, or a ‘winey [sic] bitch’ because it ‘shuts her up’ in the company of the combination of men and alcohol is a big deal and we’ll come to that later. Spectrum clearly made a social media error by asking people for feedback for 2013 planning as literally hundreds of men and women turned up to their Facebook page telling them that such drink names were offensive. But what’s possibly more disturbing than the names of the drinks is the reaction of Spectrum management and a select bunch of anti-‘feminazi’ barflies. The very fact that the bar asked for feedback and proceeded to delete tens of rational and respectful comments and requests while leaving plenty of insulting comments from their lowlife regulars also speaks volumes.

Leonard Walker thinks that those who speak up against pejorative, gender-specific derogatory slurs are automatically ‘…screeching unwashed armpiitted [sic] ones.” He sees those who find such slurs as offensive as “…faux intellectuals…” who are not only screeching but also crying and whining. Misogyny much? In his pithy paragraph he highlights exactly how he views women who speak out against degradation and also shows that he is completely unable to identify degradation when it’s happening right in front of him. It should be noted that one of the four people who ‘liked’ Leonard’s comments was the bar manager.

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 7.52.46 PM

John Thompson is under the misguided impression that making a comment on a Facebook page is a completely time consuming activity for people who believe in opposing sexism. The assumption that anti-bigots have ‘targets of the day’ is actually somewhat of a faux pas because it suggests that there are proponents of sexism to be found everywhere, and each day there is someone new dishing out the misogynistic cocktail. I wonder if that was his intent.

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 7.54.23 PM

Josh L M Brewer makes the mistake of believing that the only people who could possibly find offence with these publicity-in-a-glass stunt-drinks are ’40 something feminists’. He also makes the mistake that the same people are primarily and only occupied with getting ‘knickers in a knot’ over cocktail names and nothing else.

Screen Shot 2013-01-06 at 7.51.48 PM

Greg made a total of eight (8) spelling and grammar errors in one sentence. Enough said about this oxygen thief.

There are more highlights from the Facebook thread attached below. What we are seeing at play here is this ‘new concept’ of ‘rape culture’. If you look at any media source today, with your eyes open, you may begin to notice that women are portrayed in a completely different way to men. Women make up only 24% of news subjects (the people in the news), and appear in newspapers and magazines in far more common states of undress. Women rarely save the day in movies and television and when they are playing the heroic protagonist, they are nothing short of a fighting fuck toy (Lara Croft, Invisible Girl [Fantastic Four], Catwoman etc.). Women appear in advertising as either sexual playthings or household props and when only 2.4% of CEOs and management positions are filled by women in a country like Australia, you can start to see why people start to get their backs up when remarks like ‘whiney bitch’ and ‘slut’ are considered ‘tongue in cheek’ and part of the common vernacular.

So why does any of this matter? Why should we give two craps if some shitty dive in Brisvegas has a couple of offensive drink titles on its largely uninspiring and unoriginal cocktail menu?

1. The words ‘bitch’ and ‘slut’ are as offensive to women as the words ‘nigger’, ‘chink’, ‘dune coon’ and ‘kike’. They represent oppression, denigration and slander. When such words become commonly accepted, the negative connotations stick. Black African Americans are in the process of ‘taking back’ the word ‘nigger’ in attempts to reverse the negativity in the same way that Italians, Greeks and people from the Mediterranean are trying to nullify the effects of the word ‘wog’. It could be argued that some women are attempting to do the same with the word ‘bitch’ by proclaiming a pride in being outspoken and the organisers of the Slutwalk (a mass protest where women dressed scantily in response to police suggesting that they were less likely to be raped if they covered up) were also trying to spin a positive angle to the word ‘slut’. But naming a drink ‘bitch’ (and adding that it will shut up her ‘whining’) and ‘slut’ (because the alcohol will make her go down on you) is completely inappropriate.

2. The definition of the word ‘slut’ is basically a slovenly or promiscuous woman. If you applied that definition to a man, society would brand him a cheeky playboy and in some men’s circles a hero. But apparently it’s wrong for a female to enjoy sex or to seek multiple partners. The problem with this is that choosing one’s partners grants you power and that goes against what society deems to be appropriate for women. If a woman is ever referred to as a slut, you can rest assured that 9 times out of 10 it’s being used against her in a pejorative sense.

3. Men who are outspoken are brave and inspirational. They are confident and passionate. Women who speak up are whiney, shrieking, screeching banshees. Men who speak their mind wear their hearts on their sleeves but women who speak their mind are seen as bitches. Again, if you’re ever called a bitch, you can assume you’re not being complimented.

4. Alcohol plays a significant role in the rape scene. In various studies it has been shown that between 20-25% of rape perpetrators and rape victims have been found to be heavily intoxicated, and another between 20-25% of rape perpetrators and victims as mildly under the influence of alcohol. Let’s be clear about this: a woman under the influence of alcohol cannot consent to sex. Of course, many drunk people have sex but that doesn’t suggest that a person is able to make clear, conscious decisions about intercourse – it just means drunk sex is just a fact of life and something that will always happen. Laughing at the bar about getting someone drunk enough to root is entirely unacceptable.

The Facebook Post that Featured 178 Australians Who Want to Kill Refugees

Screen Shot 2012-12-28 at 10.09.03 AM

“What would you do?” was the question posed to the high-school drop-out inbreds on the ‘Shit Aussies say’ Facebook page. No less than 178 people called for the death of the asylum seekers and this antibogan post doesn’t even account for the literally hundreds of people merely calling for them to ‘piss off home and stop stealing our jobs/tax dollars’ (paraphrased).

This was one Facebook post on a page where racism and discrimination is rampant to say the very least. Are these people Australians? I’d like to say no. But unfortunately it seems as though this kind of behaviour – and the very obvious and evident support for bombing and killing non-whites (something the same people would despise terrorists for) is becoming far too common in this country.

Tickler loses unfair dismissal bid

July 6, 2004 – 5:05PM

The industrial umpire has rejected a claim of unfair dismissal by a university music teacher who was sacked for lifting up female students and tickling them.

Ian Leslie Shanahan, a part-time music teacher and composer, was sacked by the University of Western Sydney last year for serious misconduct.

A disciplinary committee found he had lifted female students onto his shoulders and tickled them on three occasions in August and September 2002.

He was also alleged to have smacked another student on the buttocks, and told her that “if things don’t work out between you and your fiance, you know where to come”.

The incidents followed several warnings by the university for Shanahan to “maintain a professional distance” from his students, and avoid “inappropriate behaviour”.

Shanahan disputed the committee’s ruling and went to the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC) demanding to be reinstated.

He denied “lifting and tickling” the students, and the smacking allegation.

But the AIRC this week upheld Shanahan’s dismissal, finding the evidence against him was compelling, and that “lifting and tickling female students” was improper conduct for a university lecturer.

“High standards are required of those in positions of trust,” AIRC senior deputy president Rob Cartwright said.

“Such conduct is, in my view, unacceptable and constitutes serious misconduct…”

He said the other findings of inappropriate conduct by Shanahan compounded the seriousness of his behaviour.

Citing evidence from Shanahan’s psychiatrist, senior deputy president Cartwright said the teacher’s inability to recall the incidents might be explained by a difficulty in recalling events during periods of hypomania.

However, he said he was not convinced this was the case.

Racist, Gun-Toting, Dopey Australian Embarrassments

Yeah um, no. Refugees do not get more money than pensioners. Here’s the proof:

https://theantibogan.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/refugees-get-more-money-than-pensioners/

1. How do you remove people who follow a religion from society? Wouldn’t people just start lying about their religion if Gerard went on a deportation witch hunt? It’s all well and good to want to eliminate people from society… actually, no, it’s not. But Gerard would choose to overlook other dregs just so he can carry out his xenophobic and bigoted whitewash.

2. Does Gerard realise that the vast majority of illegal immigrants are those who fly here and overstay their Visas? There are over 80,000 of these ‘illegals’ in our country right now.

3. Does someone want to let Gerard Scaballagher that Aboriginal people are not the only people who are entitled to financial and housing assistance? As for free cars – WTF?

One day, like so many children-of-bogan-arse-hats, these two children will grow up and wish that daddy hadn’t acted like a complete bell-end on a public social media website using a photo of them in his profile picture.

Meet John Atherton. He’s now into his 4th marriage (no lie – check his Facebook profile out). He’s into fucking up his life and then blaming non-whites. Obviously didn’t get much out of his Catholic education.

Ed McDonald: “Like it, love it. Should have pushed his baton through his ears and picked the scum up by the handles”

(Is that the kind of comment that should be made by someone in the defence force? The kind of guy we give guns to?)

the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect: the juxtaposition of these two images, ie. a racist gun-owner and his beauty therapist dog wife/sister.

UNINTELLIGENT Dropkicks From Down Under

Yesterday, we were accused of only ever picking on those with low intelligence.

Today, we continue our attack on those with low intelligence.

Heard it on tv / radio? MUST be fully true cuz.

Okay Adam, we hear a lot of unintelligent lowlifes explaining that they want to send Muslims ‘back to where they came from’ (while stating that they aren’t racist because religion isn’t a race), but what’s up with the bit about having anal sex with all the Muslim women first? Is the girl in your profile picture down with that? How about Express Interiors?

Joshua Butkovic teaches us that ‘if it ain’t white, it ain’t right’, but if it looks like an awkward, toothless inbred spooning a dead pig then it’s completely fine. The supremacy of the white strikes again!

i duno jake when r peple ganna harden up an riot? mayb wen u rally da troops with sum fully sik text msgs and u get it read out on da alan jones brekfast show and shit

Shit! It’s Harry and he ain’t happy ’bout the Muslims! Oh no, too late, he’s transforming into Trucking Dipshit – leader of the douchebots and he’s hardening up ready to kill masses of Muslim scum.

Are we really going to take target practice orders from this Trebilcockhead?

Zane – please – get a fucking grip. And give my 9 year old nephew his shorts back FFS.
