Anti-Muslim Rhetoric Gets Ugly Nearing Australia Day 2014

#auspol #ausmedia #ausopen @WA_Police @nswpolice @VictoriaPolice

The vile, sickening bigotry is becoming more commonplace in Australia. Here is yet another glimpse at fringe Australia’s sick obsession with being anti-Islam. Some choice comments to look out for are:

Sandra Tanner: “…DIE the lot of you.”

Jimmy James: “…would happily cut the faces of your daughter wives (sic) all day.”

Pete Rimoldi: “How about we just line you up and shoot you all with bullets dipped in pigs blood…”

Pat Hennessy: “you lot should ALL be vaporised off the planet.”

Corey Hughes: “…I would be glad to personally line up every one of u (sic) cunts and watch u (sic) burn alive…”

Laugh and Point at the Latest Bogan Fail

They failed again. Nicholas Folkes’ The Australian Protectionist Party Australian Party for Freedom in partnership with fellow frequent failers The Australian Defence League have conducted another public humiliation rally in the Bankstown-bordering suburb of Revesby (in Sydney).

Screen Shot 2013-10-21 at 5.58.56 AM

“The countdown to the rally is on.”

The Australian people were clearly geared up for this one after Nick’s Facebook page and website had spammed the event to death for weeks leading up to the massive event. (editor’s note: all references to the event have now been removed).

Screen Shot 2013-10-21 at 6.03.14 AM

“ADL will be there in full force.”

Would you like to see what ‘full force’ looks like? Surely a mass combination of the ‘Australian Party for Freedom’, ‘The Australian Protectionist Party’ and ‘The Australian Defence League’ would be able to muster up enough members and people in opposition to Islam to number in the tens of thousands.

I mean, if Nick Folkes had to use a megaphone to reach his unintelligible rumblings to all attendees, it must’ve been a rally of epic attendance.

Screen Shot 2013-10-21 at 5.58.03 AM

Alas, no.

Nick used this megaphone to speak to a circle of somewhere between 14 – 16 people who stood around him like an embarrassed, defensive ring of twats. Don’t be fooled by the pictures. The people in the background consist of bewildered onlookers, annoyed residents and a few Muslims who turned up to witness the spectacle.

Oh yeah – and there was a police presence. So your tax dollars paid for police to sit back and watch these time-wasting buffoons.

Happy Birthday Julia Gillard – Here’s Some Bogan Trash

Are you ready, dear readers? This is what the Tony Abbott/Rupert Murdoch/Alan Jones led politics of today have created, justified and fostered in the Australian public. This is what the scum of society fap over in the absence of real love and joy. This is a slap in the face to a politician who, love her or hate her managed to implement incredible progressive change that serves all of humanity while clinging to power within a hung parliament.

Happy birthday Julia Gillard. Despite the emotive power of this post, hopefully you will be warmed knowing that those that despise you are no more than the bottom feeders of a society which is built on fear. Those with half a brain appreciate much of what you have done and stood for.

BREAKING NEWS: Australian Defence League to Sue Facebook *LOL*

@slatergordon #auspol #ausmedia

Frustrated pests/Islamaphobes/keyboard warriors/drunken yobbos The Australian Defence League are (get ready for it) suing Facebook, apparently utilising the services of Slater & Gordon lawyers.

Under the leadership Facebook administration of John Abberton and Ralph Cerminara, the group is outraged that they’ve had to *gasp* cop short bans from Facebook for being racist fucktards.

The ADL are currently asking for donations from ‘members’ to fund the legal challenge despite not being able to identify any financial shortfall or social limitations from the Facebook bans. Whether or not these donations will need to be refunded in the same way that donations needed to be refunded to shmucks ‘members’ who actually forked out money for the hiring of a venue in Melbourne for a ‘meeting’ that attracted less than 5 RSVPs and had to consequently be cancelled is unclear at this stage.

The ADL has a long history of failures (scroll to the bottom to revisit some of the lowlights) and at the end of the day, only one fact remains: despite having a catch-cry of ‘NFSE’ (No Fucking Surrender Ever) and despite consistently referring to themselves as soldiers, all this pack of cockalora have ever achieved is owning a few bristling yet largely irrelevant and unpopulated Facebook groups and spending over five years trying to organise some shitty merchandise that’s still ‘in the pipeline’. We’d say that organising rallies and protest marches are also among their achievements but  when your membership is less than 0.0077% of the Australian population and of that pissweak circle-jerk club only 0.75% actually turn up to said rallies/protest marches, ‘achievement’ doesn’t quite fit the description.

When right-wing political parties can’t even attract 1% of the Australian public’s interest in a federal election, ‘organisations’ like the Australian Defence League (who can’t attract the necessary membership to even FORM political parties) are simply deluded ditch pigs, desperately upset with the state of their own mundane lives enough to try to blame others.

The ADL keep telling us all to ‘wake up’ and fear Islam, just as they do. Rise and shine indeed.

Screen Shot 2013-09-28 at 9.17.11 PM

Note: ‘no legal reason’. *Chokes on cereal*

Um, Facebook owns you and your pissy pages, you wilted herbs. You sign up under their terms and conditions and when you’re banned, you take it on the chin. If you want to refer to the banning of ‘freedom of expression/speech’, you only need to look so far as your own mission statement for a prime example of a group trying to limit the freedoms of another group.

Screen Shot 2013-09-28 at 9.17.45 PM

Note: this comment from mouth-breather Kim Williams is not racist as she is attacking Islam. Please ignore the fact that she repeatedly references ‘our country’ and how Muslims come from ‘other countries’.

As promised, here are some previous examples of how the Australian Defence League are nothing more than miserable failures dwelling on the lunatic fringe of the lunatic fringe of society:

By Randa Abdel-Fattah
July 3, 2013

Anglo-Australians are a bunch of drunken bogans. They wear wife-beater Bonds singlets, drive around in utes with bumper stickers such as ‘Real Aussies drive utes’ or ‘F off, we’re full’.

When they’re not marinating their barbecue meat in VB, they’re at the pokies or bumming around at the beach, or posing for a photo in front of a Holden while draped in an Aussie flag, posting status updates about Aussie pride.

Pretty offensive, isn’t it? This kind of crude caricature is intuitively repulsive.

Imagine what it would be like if every news story about Anglo Australians contained an accompanying image of a drunkard in a ute. Actually, no, I think I can do better than that. An image of a cast member from The Shire.

Imagine if every racist, sexist, rat bag named and shamed on the online site, the anti-bogan press, was the visual representation and dominant marker of Anglo Australian identity.

Now imagine you are a Muslim and belong to any one of the countless ethnic backgrounds that characterise the Australian Muslim community. Or imagine you are an Arab. The most persistent images of Islam and Muslims that we are bombarded with in our popular culture and media are the Shire equivalents in Muslim communities.

If you don’t believe me, just switch to Today Tonight, which regularly churns out the ‘angry bearded Muslim man’ story.

All the research demonstrates that since the 1990s and certainly post-September 11, Muslims and Arabs are our ‘folk devils’. The vitriol and Islamophobic diatribe Ed Husic (Australia’s first federal parliamentarian of Muslim background) was subjected to yesterday for choosing to swear an oath on the Koran was not surprising.

Being Australian and Muslim is considered an oxymoron.

Muslims are accused of failing to ‘fit in’ (code for abandoning one’s Muslim identity) or, as part of larger moral panics and discourses surrounding Islam, are viewed as a clandestine group attempting to subvert the nation from within.

When you type a text in your smart phone, the predictor text function automatically inserts a word that overrides what you intended to write. I believe that even the most well-meaning ‘I’m-not-racist-but types’ have failed to develop an immunity to the predictor text function.

Because we are living in a time when any and all discussions about Muslims and Arabs start from several default positions, namely, that a) Islam is intrinsically incompatible with Western values; b) Muslims and terrorism are inextricably linked and c) Islam oppresses women.

And so in the public imagination you try to say ‘Muslim’ but what you automatically get is ‘terrorist’, ‘extremist’, ‘radical’, ‘fundamentalist’, ‘Islamist’. You say Muslim woman and you get a woman in a black burqa. You say Muslim man and you get an angry, hairy bearded guy frothing at the mouth.

But wait! We should reassure ourselves, we are told ad nauseam, because the Italians, Greeks and Asians had their turn. Is that supposed to make us feel better about our experience of prejudice? We just need to wait until we can hand the baton onto another group and breathe a sigh of relief that the focus is off us.

The only thing that Australia’s ‘cycle’ of victims tells us is that Australia is fundamentally a racist country.

One of the most insidious aspects of the racism we see in Australia is how deeply entrenched it is in the language we use in our public space and discourse, and how such language threatens the capacity for Muslims as a diverse and nuanced group to be treated as legitimate citizens.

By language I mean words and representations and the values and meanings we ascribe to particular communities. I mean the way we visualise Muslim otherness.

Countless studies have been carried out that demonstrate both the overt and subtle dimensions of racism that exist in this country.

Underpinning it are moral panics about so-called boat people, ‘Islamic’ extremism, creeping shariah, the burqa debate, a clash of civilisations, angry men as ticking time bombs.

I am just as interested in subtle racism as I am in the overt. While subtle racism is systemic and pervasive, it is easily disguised and denied and represents a symbolic violence, challenging people’s status as legitimate social participants. Its banality renders it less embarrassing to the dominant cultural elite and so it doesn’t really provoke much fuss.

Yet while I am utterly appalled by our government and community stance on asylum seekers, for example, and see that debate as a clear example of how effectively some politicians and media commentators can exploit the politics of fear and racism, I am also concerned by the white-washing of our popular cultural content on TV as another example.

Trivial? Perhaps, but nonetheless an example of the dangers of systemic and subtle racism. Our popular culture and media can disenfranchise and delegitimise human beings who are literally liquid papered white in our cultural, artistic and political production.

The ‘ethnics’ and Aboriginals are relegated to SBS while commercial TV is still predominantly white. Neighbours practically imploded when an Indian family arrived on Ramsay Street.

Our hospital and medical shows are also largely white even though anybody who’s been to the ER department of any Aussie hospital knows it’s the Aussies of Indian and Asian descent who run the show.

I see this as a cultural white elite desperate to retain the delusion of a monocultural society against the reality of our clearly diverse population. As for our indigenous population, they are by and large invisible.

After all, as anthropologist Ghassan Hage argues, Australia constituted itself physically through a racist act. It exists as a territory because of an act of appropriation of a land and the decimation of a people who were defined racially.

The ‘us and them’ project continues, perpetually against indigenous Australians, and cyclically against various kinds of ‘brown or third-world looking people.’

Australia’s culture of racism can only be challenged when we acknowledge and address the systemic, shameful racism that persists against our indigenous population, and cure the racism that deprives agency and dignity to the indigenous people of this country.

This is fundamentally about honestly rejecting our colonial mindset, understanding and owning up to dominant group Anglo privilege and reinventing ourselves as a nation.

‘Love it or Leave’ – The Irrationality of Racial Bigotry in Australia. | Vibewire

It’s a line you’ve either overheard at a bar spewed by a drunken nationalist or immortalised on a sticker on the back of a ute. It’s a line you’ve either unequivocally agreed with or awkwardly shifted away from. Theantibogan is a website that does neither. It aggressively challenges the very origins of the catch phrase that has divided a nation.

Referring to itself as an anonymous entity playing Internet watchdog, it republishes the diatribes of people making publicly racist and other forms of bigoted comments under the guise of patriotism, the protection of a so-called constitution of Freedom of Speech and a defence of a so far undefined Australian ‘culture’.

The hypocrisy of the ‘love it or leave’ line is that the very people who are touting it are usually the ones who are so outwardly fed up with the state of the nation. They exhibit no love for the culturally diverse, progressive and educated Australian society that has been built on the backs of migrants. Australia truly is a multicultural country with one out of every two people either born overseas or having a relative born overseas. It would seem that if you’re the kind of person who believes in the ‘love it or leave’ mantra, you must either learn to love or put up with multiculturalism – or pack your bags.

It seems that racism has always been a subtext in Australian society from the invasion of Australia and the declaration of Terra Nullius (the idea that Aborigines were not really people, but vexatious fauna) to the White Australia Policy and the subsequent decades of discrimination towards Asians, Italians, Greeks, Indians and other scary, slightly different looking lifeforms.

Successive Australian governments have continued to disadvantage Aboriginal Australia, giving with the one hand and taking with the other. Meanwhile the rest of society watches on, unwilling to challenge the frequently presented negative generalisation that Aboriginal people are all drunken criminals.

Last week, the Australian Football League (AFL) promoted ‘Indigenous Round’ which was supposed to slide us harmoniously into National Reconciliation Week. Tens of thousands of true blue Aussies cracked the shits at Adam Goodes who pointed out a girl in the crowd who aggressively screamed at him, calling him an ‘ape’. Later on she claimed she didn’t know that the term was racist or offensive in any way, much to the soothing tuts and nods of those defending freedom of speech.

Many have been quick to denounce her actions but a similar amount of people have been quick to defend her. Perhaps she should have taken a ‘love it or leave’ approach to Aboriginals who can play football, vote and be counted in the National census. Security asked her to leave.

In 2011, one in seven people was racially discriminated against, which is nearly 3 million people. Nearly half of our population hailing from a culturally diverse background has experienced racism and three out of every four Indigenous Australians regularly experience racism. Nearly 30% of people living in NSW and Queensland harbour negative views about Muslims and it can be argued that such irrational resentment can contribute to a shift towards extremism for some misguided young men.

Islamaphobia is rife in Australia with sensationalist media outlets like Today Tonight, A Current Affair and various Murdoch rags fanning the flames whenever there is a slow news day. So desperate are these aspiring journalists to hit a nerve and attract publicity to a sensitive story that they rarely bother to illustrate the thoughts and feelings of mainstream Muslims in Australia, instead choosing to interview underground garage-preaching shady sheikhs ad nauseum about how stoning women who have been raped should be part of an Australia that Islam apparently wants shifted away from democracy and equality.

So where does the ‘love it or leave it’ mantra fit in here? In 2010, Australia welcomed fewer than 2% of refugees worldwide, yet after reading an issue of The Daily Telegraph or the Herald Sun on any given day, one would be forgiven for thinking that there were hordes of faux asylum-seekers literally docking their cruiseliners at Bondi and hacking through the beach-goers with machetes and Qurans. Yet when one takes a closer look at where refugees are actually coming from around the world, we can see that out of the top refugee contributing countries, Burma (Myanmar), Bhutan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia are all healthily represented – all with Muslim minorities.

The ‘love it or leave’ and the ‘f— off we’re full’ approaches are divisive and destructive to the cause of cultural diversity and societal harmony. It can be argued that people caught up in image and identity inferiority are more inclined to become extremist and isolationist. If there’s one way to radicalise a person risking their life by escaping from a country full of war and terror, it’s to label them as being the very scum they’ve run away from.

Why risk a self-fulfilling prophecy by trying on the notion that all human beings can find commonality and share a sense of community with one another, regardless of background or religion? These guys wouldn’t.

Misogyny Justified by Defence of ANZAC Day? (The War On Catherine Deveny)

#auspol @CatherineDeveny

Catherine Deveny has been at the centre of the most vile misogyny ever seen in this country, topped only by the vitriol directed at females in politics.

The reason for the hate mail/rape threats/death threats/slander/defamation/appearance judgement?

In the tweets which sparked the outcry, Deveny wrote that “Days like #anzacday are simply a rewriting of history to stop the sucked in and ripped off burning down parliament and killing politicians.”

She added: “I would like to see parades, medals and glorification for survivors of domestic violence, mental illness and sexual abuse #anzacday.”

Deveny is suggesting that;

* ANZAC Day is overly glorified and less of a remembrance day than a day of celebrating and getting trashed. Agree?

* ANZAC Day is a welcome distraction for politicians who are slashing the guts out education, health, transport etc and finding new and inventive ways to ensure you continue to be oppressed. Agree?

* As a nation we glorify war and we pay absolutely zero attention to survivors of domestic violence, mental illness and sexual abuse. Agree?

Here is the backlash. Screenshots taken from here
