Less than a week after innocent people lost their lives after fleeing inhumanity and persecution in their home countries, ‘true blue’ Aussies are laughing about their deaths. Never mind the fact how many children were left as orphans after this tragedy, no. Never mind how many of these men and women had jobs and education back in their home country, no. Never mind that these people don’t actually have the opportunity to stroll up to an airport with their passport and ask to leave the country that persecutes them, no.
These people were believed to be from Iraq. A place apparently improved by our armed forces. A suicide bomber killed over 20 civilians the day after they left their shores. This is an almost daily occurrence.
If this shit was happening in Australia, you can be sure that brave, family-minded Australians would be thinking of what was best for their families and looking for any possible way of leaving and heading to a safer country. But all we can do is sit back and laugh at these people who have never known what it’s like to be free, to eat at nice restaurants, to walk their dog in the park, to take their kids to the beach and to go on a roller coaster. These people have never had rights and their opportunities have been limited. They live every day in fear, assuming it will be their last. These people have never had religious freedom, nor have they had social security.
But sure, let’s laugh at them when they search for a better life. Let’s criticise their decision to risk their lives and the lives of their wives and children because it is a lesser risk than staying in their home country. Let’s call them terrorists even though terrorists generally have money and contacts and arrive in planes. Let’s talk about shooting them as they arrive and then let’s go to church and talk about living a life in the so called image of God. Let’s sit on Facebook and talk about things we have absolutely no clue about and then brag about ‘standing up for our country’.

I seriously doubt that anyone is laughing at these poor people and further doubt that their are calls to shoot them. I can well understand their desire to create a better life for themselves and their families but you also have to consider the process they have gone through to come here. How many safe havens have they passed through to get to Indonesia and on to these boats? The problems are with this whole process are international. The UNHCR, the responsible body for refugee movements, are seriously failing in their responsibilities. Safe Haven countries should be adequately resourced to provide facilities for people fleeing from oppression and dire circumstances like war zones. Resettlement camps need to be sufficiently equipped to preserve human dignity and adequately care for these unfortunate people. ALL countries who are willing to accept refugees need to step up to the plate and provide processing facilities in these safe haven camps in order to facilitate processing and resettlement. Every country that is signatory to the UNHCR agreements need to step up to the plate and adequately finance and resource settlement processes so that it is not necessary for people to undertake the risky ocean journey on boats that are not safe to and should never have been allowed to depart port. Your post is hysteria bordering on the the extreme. In making these over the top accusations and emotive statements you are not helping the cause one iota, you are actually hindering it. You’re wrong. There are plenty of people rejoicing this tragedy. Thankfully they remain a minority. By highlighting their isolated and inhumane views, it shows just how shallow those views and the people who hold them are. It doesn’t whip up hysteria at all. As for the people smugglers – they do not benefit from a boat smashed upon the shore. And while we continue to demonise the people smugglers themselves, at some point we need to acknowledge that these people are helping people flee their countries – something that is somewhat noble. Germans who hid fleeing Jews in their houses were people smugglers to a degree – the only difference was that they weren’t financially profiting from human misery and that is the negative aspect attributed to modern people smugglers.

Most charity organisations that we know of ‘Save the Children’, ‘Childfund’ etc etc, make money, pay their employees and pay their CEOs a huge amount of money. It doesn’t necessarily negate what they do to provide people with resources and opportunity.

Set up a safe, secure and patrolled came in Uganda and see how long it takes for the UN to adeqauate guarantee the support of the nation state that their camp will be free from attack, and how long it takes for their subsiduaray aid agencies to secure medical aid and equipment from beligerant groups which control vast swathes of the territory and their passage to the camp their government has (maybe) relucantantly agreed to.
And then see how long this new, secure, utopian camp lasts before maurauding soldiers invade, and kill those of a marginalised ethnic clan (which will be easy to find, because ethic clusters are typically kept together in camps). While they’re looting the camp, they’ll round up every child aged between 4 and 16 to join their army to fight for something, anything .. they might call it ‘freedom’. Then see how long it takes before your refugees get typhoid or cholerea (the ones who are still alive that it), but they can’t get adequate treatment because there isn’t the equipment. The Government, the clans, the proxy armies see the camp and UN and the UNHCR as a blight, a road block to their so called independence ..

Is also worth noting that there is a refugee detention centre (Baxter) in Port Augusta, approx 60km from Whyalla. Although yes, unless he’s meeting them in society, it doesn’t sound like Boofy will be visiting there soon.

Hardly a sustainable life that could provide any sense of hope or stability. Even those who have been recognised by the UNHCR as refugees are often kept in limbo for years in countries such as Indonesia without access to healthcare, education or work rights – there is simply nowhere for these people to go.
Stopping the boats is in essence it is a great idea; I don’t want to see people put their lives at risk on a boat journey to a country who already knows they are there desperately waiting.
But ‘stopping the boats’ is not the central issue. We need to focus on why people flee in the first place and how they are treated once they do.
Aside from putting an end to persecution, we can only stem the flow of boats with regional cooperation focused on actually protecting refugees and asylum seekers.
Our neighbours in South-East Asia and Asia need to sign the Refugee Convention and adhere to its requirements. Australia needs to establish and support regional processing and protection – the burden should not be placed on other countries, it should be shared and the boat journey taken out of the equation.
Human nature is such that we generally don’t want to leave our homeland for an unknown destination, travelling in sub-standard and frightening conditions. Australia needs to play its part and remove this boat ‘option’ by providing humane, prompt solutions to processing and settlement of asylum seekers and refugees whom we know are in the region.
Dividing refugees into ‘good’, ‘bad’, ‘illegal’, ‘queue jumpers’, ‘those with money’ and the many other mistruths flying about at present is not helpful to any kind of rational and sensible discussion of the issues.
It is perfectly legal to arrive by boat and without documentation – the United Nations and countries such as Australia who signed the Refugee Convention acknowledged back in 1951 that such circumstances may occur for people fleeing. It is hardly possible to go to an airport, present a passport and ask for exit from a country that is persecuting you.
We know these people are desperate, we know the countries they are passing through, we know the lengths they will go to and now we are reminded of the fatal cost this can have.”

And over the past 20 years or so, it was recently reported that 20 BILLION dollars was spent on measures to keep these poor buggers from landing in the Western Suburbs of Sydney and other such underprivileged areas.
As opposed to this needless waste, we could let them land, do standard security and health checks, then release them into the community on a parole-style model while their claims are processed. They would be under far more effective surveillance that the much larger numbers of visa overstayers, who are the REAL illegals. Oh, but we don’t want to complains about overstayers, now do we ? Upon return – I am happy to see that you have managed to convince everyone here that your perceptions are true and accurate and so your constant and continual rants have proven worthwhile.
Aren’t you glad that you made a difference? Aren’t you happy that you are a positive, beneficial member of society?

Shockadelic, what exactly is your point? Your arguments, when posed seriously don’t stack up, and throughout most of your post, you’re belittling without forming a coherent debate. This shows that you are here simply for puerile entertainment purposes. Apparently there is nothing good on tv tonight. Evidently Border Patrol has already screened it’s final episode for the year.
I think the Antibogan has every right to express disgust towards those who think it’s amusing to joke about people dying because the system for processing refugees is fraught with inadequacies, and they are forced to flee horrific conditions only to encounter yet more. It IS disgusting.
Uhm, without reading the drivel in all the comments about humanity, love and peace etc, my issue is why these people think it’s worth the journey to Australia? Soft target perhaps? No doubt once they get settled at our expense, we’ll hear about how beautiful Iraq is, how it’s the cradle of civilisation, and how one day there will be peace there. Unfortunately it’ll be no thanks to the cowards who deserted their own country when it needed them most.
