Two weeks ago in Sydney, a small group of White-nationalists-in-anarchist-drag rocked up to a rally against the latest Israeli attack on Gaza (aka ‘Operation Pillar of Defense’, November 17). Armed with banners, Anonymous masks and bizarro political merch (branded tees and the like), the 10 or so wingnuts were soon identified as hostile by members of the crowd, who proceeded to isolate them outside the Town Hall. Reportedly, an attempt was made to confiscate one of their banners, which was unsuccessful. The White nationalists were then surrounded by police, and remained silent and stationary at the Town Hall for the duration of the rally.

So, who were these wEiRd0eS?

Their propaganda proclaimed them to be ‘national anarchists’. While the term may seem oxymoronic, ‘national anarchism’ is in fact an ideological development on the far right, one whose immediate origins can be traced back to the late 1980s and early 1990s and attempts by racists and fascists to find a place for their activities among anarchists in England. The standard account of this fringe and its evolution during this period is ‘Co-opting the Counter Culture: Troy Southgate and the National Revolutionary Faction’, Graham D. Macklin, Patterns of Prejudice, Vol.39, No.3, September 2005.

Despite having some initial success (fooling a handful of leftists, including the recently-deceased Terry Liddle, into collaborating with them), Southgate and his followers found little real political purchase among radicals. Of course organising, from the mid-2000s, a talking-shop in London, calling it ‘New Right’, and inviting various extreme-right wing loons — including Holocaust-denialists and other mentalists — to talk shit to other wEiRd0eS doesn’t help any. In any event, Southgate & Co have sensibly turned to the online world for support and in this realm they’ve been reasonably successful, the milieu specialising in virtual political expressions, seemingly on the basis of Ein Volk, Ein Blog (my favourite being a Hitler-worshipping Afro-punk).

In Australia, the national anarchists (hereafter referred to as gnats) announced their existence back in 2007, when a group of around 20 or so right-wing loons of diverse origins — including Darrin Hodges, the (former) leader of the anti-Muslim ‘Australian Protectionist Party’ in NSW, and disgraced academic and White racialist Andrew Fraser — gathered at the APEC counter-protests, also in Sydney. (See : Anarchist statement on the New Right, October 21, 2007.) As in the more recent incident, at APEC the racist wankers were isolated and protected by a large number of police.

The principal exponent of ‘national anarchism’ in Australia is a Sydney-based small businessman named Welf Herfurth (above, with Adelaide-based Holocaust denialist Fredrick Töben, together holding an NPD flag belonging to German neo-Nazi Horst Mahler), who has been joined in the past by a handful of Victorians (including a young Creatard from Geelong named Scott Harrison), a student from Perth named Nicholas Cole, and more recently several boneheads. Thus for reasons best known to themselves, the members of the Australian franchise of the US-based neo-Nazi Volksfront gang cultivated close links with Herfurth & Co in Sydney. Following its formal dissolution in October (seemingly as a result of US pressure on the group in the wake of neo-Nazi skinhead Wade Michael Page’s murderous spree), it would seem reasonable to expect other boneheads to increase the level of their activity on behalf of the gnats/New Right. As it stands, it’s difficult to gauge the seriousness with which the gnats in Sydney intend to continue to provoke the left, but a source in Sydney’s Chinatown reckons a former VF member called Steev Levings [?] is keen, and Steev’s political loyalties find graphic expression on his body:

The recent Gaza intervention is one of just a handful of public manifestations by gnats, who for whatever reason seem to be concentrated in Sydney (as is the Australia First Party and Australian Protectionist Party), while Melbourne can boast of being the centre of B&H and Hammerskin activity and the tiny groupuscule Nationalist Alternative. Further afield, the gnats appear to have only been able to maintain a temporary presence on The Streets of San Francisco — in the shape of a bunch of BANANAs. A beat-down on BANANA leader Andrew White (‘Andrew Yeoman’) on May Day a coupla years ago — and his subsequent denouncement by ideologue Southgate as a psychopath and race traitor — put paid to White’s dream of a Bay Area purged of non-Whites, but not before the racist loser paid a visit to Australia to address AF’s annual conference the (2009) Sydney Forum (at which his kamerad Welf Herfurth performs as MC).

Otherwise, the gnats may be located within a wider attempt by the far right to re-articulate a form of racist nationalism, one which has taken on increasing significance, especially in Europe, over the last few decades. Sex and the Single Bogot

The far right are a bunch of try-hards. They love to spend a lot of time discussing sex in all its manifestations especially when it is somehow related to their opponents. If it is not related to their opponents they still try hard.

Bec Atkins has now added obstetrics to her string bag of cheap tricks and is very keen to get her fellow bogots to reproduce so that “them” (hated minority of the moment) won’t beat the bogots in the breeding stakes.

We are a little puzzled. Bec wants Aussie women to churn out babies so where are they going to get the time for jobs of “power and high education”? And we somehow cannot see too many bogots with their limited outlook and poor understanding of the world ever qualifying for any of these “jobs of power and high education”. Sounds a lot like “Kinder, Küche und Kirche” to us.

Here, well-known eugenics expert and mountain survivalist Chris “BO Plenty” Merrett cranks out his version of first contacts with Indigenous people. One must ask – leaving aside BO’s repugnant racism for a second, what is this obsession the neo-Nazis “white nationalists” have with sodomy?

We know women are somewhat thin on the ground in the cop-free Victorian wilderness where BO prefers to hide out. Maybe the critters just run too fast eh?

Scott Neale, bearded baldie elder of the Australian Penile Dysfunction Movement APDM has little to do these days as his tiny  Facebook group party shrivels into well-deserved obscurity. And we can tell as he gets together behind the dunnies with his mates from Year 4 and indulges in some anti-Muslim non-humour.

We can see “Bear Rahh”‘s Saturday nights must be busy indeed in front of the monitor with the porn.

Now here’s that fine body of hunky warriors the APDM. No doubt the ladies are swooning as we speak.

Oh, we thought you’d like a picture of ethno-sexpert Marcus Jenkins. Just so you know why he’d be hanging around an old guy like Scott at weekends instead of scoring with the chicks.

We are not sure why the bloke next to our heart-throb has fallen asleep, but we can guess why. Marcus has probably treated him to some of his “humour”. Or maybe he had some sex advice from one of the Scotts.

Perhaps he should take up something more exciting than exploring sex with Marcus.

Alan is so proud to be associated with the EDL and with convicted rioter Tommy Robinson Paul Harris Stephen Yaxley-Lennon (make up your mind son) that he wears his best British Legion clobber.

We are sure that his fellow Falklands vets would be happy that someone was besmirching the proud traditions of the Legion (the UK’s equivalent of the RSL) by hanging out in his kit with a bunch of Fascist football hooligans.

Anyway old Alan is also rather interested in sex, but not as we know it.

Village of the Damned

Peter Lord’s “crime”? Being involved in the Celebrating Diversity Coalition and Campaign Against Racism, an anti-racism group. Lord of course, like many other normal Australians, would have assumed that being a public activist for a more tolerant and just society was a perfectly legitimate and praiseworthy activity. After all, the notion of a tolerant and just society is continually being pushed by politicians from the major parties, is a mandatory perspective in schools both public and private and is even upheld by the churches. However our knuckle-dragging “white nationalists” (note they never call themselves Nazis or neo-Nazis, but this is what they are) thought differently.

After a failed anti-asylum seeker rally in 2009 outside the Villawood Detention Centre by the Australian Protectionist Party (who prefer to call themselves “nationalists”, who are sort of the beige shirts of the neo-Nazis “white nationalists”), a blogger published photographs of and commentary on the demonstration and of the far larger counter-demonstration mounted by about 300 people from various progressive and refugee advocacy groups. The blogger was subjected to a campaign of vilification, threats and hate which extended from Facebook even into the Comments section of the Sydney Indymedia site, not a place you would think the far right would feel particularly welcome.

In 2010 an activist in the Newtown area came to the notice of certain elements calling themselves “white nationalists” (or in the case of the more squeamish, just beige “nationalists”). In return for his public activism he was subjected to a finger-pointing campaign on a nasty little “anti-antifa” website (now thankfully removed) run by various veterans of Volksfront, a disparate rag-tag group of the socially challenged.

Recently, another outspoken anti-racist, a productive and valuable member of his community, has had his home and family targeted. Among other abuses, his daughter was phoned in the middle of the night and abused by the caller, and dead animals have been sent to him through the mail.

Why was he targeted? It seems he exercised his right to “free speech” on Facebook to robustly criticise hate groups and their members. But wait, these neo-Nazis “white nationalists” won’t stand for that. In their alternate universe “free speech” is only to be used loudly and inaccurately to convey hate speech.

And in most cases it seems these morons don’t even need a particular reason. For example, the bile isn’t confined to non-whites, Muslims, Jews or immigrants. Slandering and threatening women and gays is also a neo-Nazi “white nationalist” speciality.

The list of crimes members of these neo-Nazi movements are responsible for include murder, the attempted assassination of a prominent member of the African National Congress living in exile in Australia, vandalism of synagogues, mosques and cemeteries, a fire-bomb attack on a Chinese restaurant in Fremantle, attacks on the homes and property of activists, death threats of various sorts and the continued vilification and harassment of of minorities. In addition many of them, to put it politely, are “known to police” and offences include domestic violence and assaults up to and including grievous bodily harm.

Stacks up fairly well against the Underbelly mob in the hoodlum stakes.

These “movements” have one thing in common – they will stalk their targets and use threats, intimidation and extortion to silence their victims.

If you are unclear as to what this means, take a look at the relevant legislation. If you do not live in NSW, be aware that other states have strikingly similar laws.

While you are at it, take a look at Section 249K of the Crimes Act (NSW) which talks about extortion.

The inspiration for the title of this piece actually came from Josana’s blog where she outlines the vicious campaign against the activist mentioned in the Extortion entry.

Josana manages to expose a whole colourful procession of bottom-feeders, all associated to a greater or lesser degree with these neo-Nazis self-styled “white nationalists”. Our next entry is going to have a closer look at some of these characters.

And with the events in Norway in mind, it is perhaps appropriate to read of the price paid by Swedish writer and activist Stieg Larsson and his family in his own tolerant, liberal, prosperous country .

From Lessons from Stieg Larsson

As Expo grew, the neo-Nazis in Sweden targeted it,… both of them were placed on hit lists, and were in enough danger to barricade their apartment doors and arrange for special police protection. “Stieg would receive bullets in the mail, and once someone was waiting for him outside the entrance of the TT building [where he worked]. Warned in time, Stieg slipped out a back door,” Gabrielsson writes.

“Our answering machine was set permanently on ‘record’ to keep evidence of the threats we received,” she continues, “and they were always in the same vein: ‘Piece of shit, you Jew-fucker…Traitor, we’ll tear you apart…and we know where you live.'” At the sign of the slightest provocation on their apartment block police cars would descend on the street. The danger was undeniably real: Two journalists who once worked for Expo and were later employed by Aftonbladet, one of Sweden’s largest newspapers, wrote an expose of the neo-Nazi black metal music operations. One of them was seriously injured when his car was bombed. A labor union leader who revealed neo-Nazi names was shot dead.

These events, and what Larsson felt was the government’s failure to protect citizens, made their way into Larsson’s fiction, says Gabrielsson, for example via the murders of Dag Svensson and Mia Bergman in The Girl Who Played With Fire. “In fact, everything of this nature described in The Millennium Trilogy has happened at one time or another to a Swedish citizen, journalist, politician, public prosecutor, unionist, or policeman. Nothing was made up.”
