Very briefly, a couple of people have contacted me regarding the distribution of some White supremacist propaganda at Swinburne University in Hawthorn. Here’s a sample:
The posters appear to have been sourced from Stormfront; the world’s leading White supremacist website, established some years ago now by Don Black, a former Klansman and convicted terrorist. Just recently, his son Derek Black, another active proponent of White supremacy, has denounced his father’s ideology, declaring that white nationalism was really about “an entrenched desire to preserve white power at the expense of others”.
Presumably, a student at Swinburne has some ‘issues’ regarding their racial identity they would probably be better off talking to a counsellor at the campus than expending their energies trying to create an unwelcoming environment for the many thousands of other students who attend the Hawthorn campus. Note that, over the last few years, nazis of one sort or another have distributed their agitprop at LaTrobe, Melbourne and RMIT universities. Most recently, stickers have been spied outside Ascot Vale train station — the same stickers (including one proclaiming ‘Death to Refugees!’) which have seen five men in court in WA, charged with criminal damage. Ascot Vale was also the site of the vicious bashing of a Vietnamese student, Minh Duong, in December 2012, by a group of self-proclaimed nazis …
In any event, props to the students unwilling to tolerate this kinda visual pollution.
Since way back in 2009, the bogots have had their panties in a twist over proposed changes to Australia Day. A chain email went around telling people that the Government was going to change the name of Australia Day to ‘Citizen’s Day’. Of course, the natural bogot reaction was to immediately believe a chain email and not to do a little bit of research to validate such an outrageous claim.
The closest we ever came to a change in anything Australia Day related was back in ’09 when Australian of the Year and Indigenous academic and activist Mick Dodson suggested that it seemed a little morbid that we celebrate a day of invasion and dispossession of the original inhabitants of the land, the Aboriginal people. Prime Minister at the time Kevin Rudd’s response? “…a simple, respectful, but straightforward no.”
The day when Australia came into existence as a country was January 1st, 1901. But we already have a public holiday on that day so why bother replacing it, right?
The power of the British Parliament to legislate for Australia was not legally removed until the adoption of the Australia Act in 1986. This Act came into force on 3rd March, but I think that’s a bit too obscure for most people to want to claim that as Australia Day.
On the 27th of May, 1967 a referendum was passed enabling Aboriginal people to be counted in the National census for the first time (ie. become recognised as actual humans and citizens of our country). But to pander to the Abos would be outrageous according to the bogots who rose up against people like Ron Barassi for lending support to the notion.
It seems that Australia Day has become little more than a public holiday where Aussies are encouraged to get as drunk as they can and fill themselves to breaking point full of BBQed meat. It’s a day where we see the Australian flag draped over sweaty bodies and dragged through the dirt, and then held in front of non-whites to kiss. And the slightest hint that we should be reflective of the contributions of all Australians regardless of their origin or religion is screamed down and laughed at by the small bogan population who long for the olden days where non-whites were refused entry because of imaginary perilous diseases and women were restricted to the kitchen and the bedroom.
Mitch Fing isn’t racist as he has Samoan and Tongan friends. But he thinks they should probably ‘get back on the boat’.

People who fly Australia Day flags on their cars tend to express more racist attitudes than others without flags, according to research findings at The University of Western Australia.
UWA sociologist and anthropologist Professor Farida Fozdar and a team of assistants surveyed 513 people at last year’s Australia Day fireworks on Perth’s Swan River foreshore.
One in five said they had attached flags to their cars to celebrate Australia Day.
Professor Fozdar said 43 per cent of those with car flags said they believed the now-abandoned White Australia Policy had saved Australia from many problems experienced by other countries, while only 25 per cent without flags agreed.
(Non-Europeans were barred from migrating to Australia until after World War II, when immigration restrictions began to ease.)
A total of 56 per cent of people with car flags feared their culture and its most important values were in danger, compared with 34 per cent of non-flaggers.
And 35 per cent of flaggers felt that people had to be born in Australia to be truly Australian, while 23 per cent believed that true Australians had to be Christian, compared with 22 per cent and 18 per cent respectively for non-flaggers.
Professor Fozdar said her research also revealed clear differences in how people with car flags felt towards minority groups.
Only 39 per cent of flaggers expressed a positive view towards Aboriginal Australians compared with 47 per cent of non-flaggers, 19 per cent of flaggers felt positive towards Muslim Australians compared with 26 per cent of non-flaggers; seven per cent of flaggers were positive towards asylum seekers compared with 24 per cent of non-flaggers, and 27 per cent with flags felt positive towards Asian Australians compared with 48 per cent of non-flaggers.
Three survey questions sought views on Australian cultural diversity: 64 per cent of people with car flags agreed that it was good for people from different ethnic, religious and racial groups to live in Australia, compared with 75 per cent of non-flaggers.
An overwhelming 91 per cent of people with car flags agreed that people who move to Australia should adopt Australian values, compared with 76 per cent of non-flaggers.
A total of 55 per cent of flaggers believed migrants should leave their old ways behind, compared with 30 per cent of non-flaggers.
However majorities of both groups – 60 per cent of flaggers and 73 per cent of non-flaggers – also felt that it was best to respect and learn from each other’s cultural differences.
Professor Fozdar said there was no clear link between education, gender, ethnicity, citizenship, voting pattern or income and flag flying, although her survey showed a slightly higher likelihood of younger rather than older people adopting the practice.
In terms of nationalism, 88 per cent of those with Australia Day car flags said they thought it showed they were proud to be Australian, while only 52 per cent of those without flags thought so.
Some thought the increased popularity of flying Australia Day car flags was due to increased patriotism while others said it was simply peer pressure to follow the trend or avoid seeming unpatriotic.
Many said it was due to marketing and the cheap availability of car flags, while some thought it was a response to loss of culture due to multiculturalism, immigration, invasion and terrorism.
“What I found interesting is that many people didn’t really have much to say about why they chose to fly car flags or not,” Professor Fozdar said.
“Many felt strongly patriotic about it – and for some, this was quite a racist or exclusionary type of patriotism – but it wasn’t a particularly conscious thing for many.
“Very clear statistical differences in attitudes to diversity between those who fly car flags and those who don’t, show that flag waving – while not inherently exclusionary – is linked in this instance to negative attitudes about those who do not fit the ‘mainstream’ stereotype’.”
Professor Fozdar said fewer people said they flew Australia Day car flags last year – one in five – compared with 2010 when it was one in four.
The newspaper story (see below) contains all the usual elements, including lulz (“The theme of this music festival goes against Australia’s multicultural values,” Dr Szoke said) but nevertheless a few comments, corrections and clarifications are in order.
First, this is the third, not second, year in a row that the Festival has been held in Queensland. Previous performers include Deaths Head and Ravenous (Melbourne) and Open Season (Brisbane).
Secondly, both B&H and the Hammerskins have experienced legal difficulties overseas. Thus, B&H is banned not only in Germany (where, as in Austria and a number of other European countries, the open promotion of neo-Nazism is illegal) but also Belgium and Portugal, while the Hammerskins are outlawed in Germany, Portugal and Spain. (The leader of the Portuguese Hammerskins, Mário Machado, is currently serving a seven-year sentence for coercion, robbery, kidnapping and illegal possession of weapons.) In September 2009 a half-hearted attempt to bring about a ban on B&H in the UK was fail.
Thirdly, while it’s technically possible for a ‘concerned citizen’ to lodge a complaint with the Australian Human Rights Commission regarding the gig, this depends upon them actually being in attendance (or having the misfortune of overhearing it). However, as the Hammered Festival — like all such events organised by the neo-Nazis concerned — is held at an undisclosed location this seems extraordinarily unlikely. (In order to attend the gig, a member of the public must first make contact with B&H and arrange to meet; and only if they meet with the approval of the organisers will they be provided with further details.)
In any event, the neo-Nazis involved have been successfully organising gigs for the last 20 years in Australia (indeed, Hammered 2012 is intended to celebrate the boneheads’ 20 years of stoopid), their gigs have never been the subject of a complaint, and in only a handful of instances (that I’m aware of) have the groups experienced any real difficulties as a result of these activities.

Controversial Hammered Music Festival for neo-Nazis to be held in Brisbane in 2012 Sunday Mail January 8, 2012
A CONTROVERSIAL neo-Nazi music festival will be held in Brisbane this year, drawing white supremacists from around the world.
The controversial Hammered Music Festival, already being advertised through white pride websites, will take place in a secret Brisbane location in April and feature race hate music from international and local bands.
The white pride gathering attracted protests and nationwide criticism last year when it was held on the Gold Coast, and a range of groups have already spoken out against the event.
Federal Race Discrimination Commissioner Dr Helen Szoke this week slammed the white pride festival as “abhorrent to our community”, and said offended parties could complain under the Racial Discrimination Act.
“The theme of this music festival goes against Australia’s multicultural values,” Dr Szoke said.
Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia chairman Pino Migliorino said the festival was the work of a “lunatic fringe” and he was concerned about the underlying message of the festival.
“It’s an appalling set of beliefs that they have,” he said.
“The reality is a great majority of Australians are not racist and are comfortable with cultural and linguistic diversity.”
The event is being organised by the Southern Cross Hammerskins, the Australian arm of a worldwide group.
Another organiser, Blood and Honour, was banned in Germany in 2000 after a number of foreigners were attacked by neo-nazis inspired by music at the group’s events.
But Queensland Police Service and the Brisbane City Council have said the groups can legally hold the event.
A QPS spokesman said as long as the groups and the festival-goers abided by the law, the police would not become involved.
“Police are aware of the festival in question. However, until such a time that a law is broken or a complaint is made, it is not a police issue,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the Gold Coast City Council reported no problems when the event was held there, and the group had the same rights as any other organisation.

Racism is a combination of prejudice and power. And sadly prejudice is a deeply ingrained human trait. Globally, white people are the dominant group, and in politics, economics, the media and all aspects of society, this power is used every day. It starts from the top and filters down to white people everywhere, regardless of their individual economic situation. At the highest level, when President Bush tells Palestinians a different leader must take the place of the man they elected, he’s treating them as second-class human beings. When the leaders of western economic powers deny fair trading terms to African countries, they are doing exactly the same. And the images of these pathetic victims help fuel more stereotypes about their “inferior” status. Every day the white power structure – be it global, national or local – makes decisions which impinge on the lives of non-white people.

Australia was founded as a white nation because the first people to come here and steal land off the Indigenous Aborigines were white. That means that globally, ‘true-blue white Aussies’ make up less than 1% of the population. It’s inevitable that there will eventually be more Asian-looking people in our country over time. They’re already here, and they’re contributing to our society, while continuing to produce Asian-looking babies. Deal with it. It is NOT genocide, and here is why:
White people aren’t killed in Australia as part of a conspiracy or governmental/dictatorship movement. Nor are they prohibited from procreating – moreover they are encouraged. The number of white people in Australia, and globally, will increase. The percentage of white people (and Australians in particular) as a comparison with the global population will decrease. Some time back, Australians against Racism and Discrimination, a Facebook anti-discrimination group, had the pleasure of featuring a video made by a young Chinese-Australian woman, Kimberley S.
The video was a response to the SBS three-part series Go Back to Where You Came From, and reinforces some of the points made in that series about the small number of refugees and asylum seekers taken by Australia compared to the numbers taken by other countries.
Soon after posting the video on YouTube, Kimberley started getting the predictable nauseous responses from the usual neo-Nazi white supremacist racist “patriotic” Strayans and other international lowlife with the usual insults which we won’t bore or distress Kimberley or other readers with.
Kimberley followed this video with another one, a response to a girl’s Facebook status.
In this video, Kimberley related the story of her own background and recorded her observations on racism in Australia from her perspective. She includes comments from well-known xenophobes and ends with a reminder that Australia is a multicultural nation, yet our media, particularly our commercial media, do not reflect this.

P.s Before you comment on my heritage when you know nothing about it. I am not from China. Only one of my parents are from China. My dad is actually from PNG my grand dad fought for Australia in the 2nd World War (yes, he was Asian) and when my dad was born, PNG was “owned” by Australia at the time. It wasn’t till I think after I was born in QLD (my parents already settled in what we called Australia, now) PNG got its independence back. I am not less Australian than you are. Migration has been going on for centuries so before messaging me and send me racist comments about “where I come from” or talking about my parents like you know them – I think you should stop and consider this.

And its resident population of tiresome knuckle-dragging trog failures has risen briefly from their torpor to “critique” these videos in their own all-too-familiar fashion.
