Early this evening on a Brisbane train a man was filmed racially abusing a security guard.
The security guard had apparently requested that the man remove his feet from the opposite seat. The man then started abusing the guard.
The man has allegedly been identified as Kader Boumzar.

Not only should racial attacks be outlawed but so should foul language in public places be also an offence. The authorities largely ignore this these days, yet it is usually the abusive expletives which spark most altercations on the street. The young man might be complaining about the guard’s accent, but his own English leaves a lot to be desired. He too needs to learn some English, decent English with a decent set of adjectives. Expletives are used only by those who lack vocabulary and can find no decent descriptives to express themselves.
On the other hand, I do not agree with Government officials having foreign accents, because it takes into no consideration the elderly or the hard-of-hearing. It is impossible to understand them at times and this is an important consideration, particularly in the case of an emergency, for example.
For the record, people with clear accents tend to win out in the job fronts because they perform better in interviews. But this is not a Government official-he’s a train guard. If there was an army of men with clear BBC accents who wanted to be train guards….they would have the job, but there ain’t! It’s not the case of “We should only employ people with clear accents” when most people who apply for the job do not have “educated” accents.
And that’s ignoring the years of experience and skills we are potentiall ignoring if we focus on accents over skills. Plenty of highly skilled nurses and doctors I know who can’t get jobs because of a very slight accent. It’s not like we have an overabundance of either Doctors or Nurses by the way.
This guard clearly demonstrated through his actions that he’s the right person for the job, irrespective of accent.

Thank you for your input JM. Language discrimination, including accents, makes it harder for migrants to get jobs that match their skills, even for positions where communication with the public is a marginal part of the job. And it’s important to stress that it’s extremely hard to change your accent, especially when speaking in a language learned as an adult.
To me the guard sounded like he probably came from somewhere like Nigeria, Zimbabwe or Uganda where English is widely spoken and is taught in schools. Like Indian English, African variants of English are accented but they are legitimate variants of English in the same way Scots or Northern English are.
KADER BOUMZAR video got millions of hits on its world debut. Online reports mentioned he is known to police, but is only 17. Does that grant him immunity?

I’m a Social worker working with asylum seekers, my previous work has been in the department of education, and prior to that I was orgnaising care arrangements for elderly citizens. Whether Mr Boumzar’s ethnicity/religion is ‘actually’ Arab, Anglo (Saxon/Celtic), Muslim, Christian, atheist or whatever, is not particularly important. What is more relevant is that this assault was perpetrated by an Australian who defines themselves (and their nationality) by skin colour and accent, and who (because of this) sees themselves as both superior and more entitled than others claiming the same nationality.
Highlighting the etymology and origin of his name ex post the fact of the incident, or drawing assumptions of his religious beliefs (if any) from his name or alcohol consumption, is to miss the point of how Mr Boumzar views himself, race and the validation of Australian identity. People are not racist or bigoted ‘because’ they are white, any more than those who are not white are ipso facto immune from displaying such beliefs, behaviour etc.
Whilst such behaviour is of course unacceptable and should be condemned, prosecuted etc., simply attacking this individual does very little to address the underlying causes. He did not form his views despite living in contemporary Australia, he formed them because of it. He wasn’t born with his attitude, it was influenced and developed. What experiences and environment have led him to, by the age of just 17, such national infamy? Any answer to this must necessarily involve his family, friends, and the wider community – i.e. all of us. Anything less is head in the sand scapegoating.

To a muslim there is NO GOD – What’s-his name? – mohammed – isn’t a god, he is just a man who “borrowed” ideas from many other religions to form a “religion of his own”. He was so empty of ideas that he even needed to change his “borrowed ideas” whenever he found those who listened to him did not like what he was teaching. These listeners’ whole lifestyle had been handed down to them for centuries (possibly thousands of years) were always based on fighting anyone and everyone, taking other people’s valuables, yet they wanted, stealing – considered “borrowing” without ever being given back, always coveting others people’s property and lands.

Take a look around on this site. Look at comment threads, and notice how all comment threads can only go three replies deep (As in, you can at maximum reply to a reply, to a reply, to an original comment-no deeper than that). Do you think that all of these people have somehow got the power to switch off their replies?
In fact, wassupdoc- you too have got a comment which cannot be directly replied to. The comment you made on October 15, 2014 at 3:38 pm, which starts:

Have a look at that comment, see if you can reply to it. You can’t, because again there is a limit as to how deep a comment chain can go on this site. Or perhaps you’re right, and there is a conspiracy to prevent you replying, and you’re a part of the conspiracy. whichever is easier.
