Misogyny Justified by Defence of ANZAC Day? (The War On Catherine Deveny)

#auspol @CatherineDeveny

Catherine Deveny has been at the centre of the most vile misogyny ever seen in this country, topped only by the vitriol directed at females in politics.

The reason for the hate mail/rape threats/death threats/slander/defamation/appearance judgement?

In the tweets which sparked the outcry, Deveny wrote that “Days like #anzacday are simply a rewriting of history to stop the sucked in and ripped off burning down parliament and killing politicians.”

She added: “I would like to see parades, medals and glorification for survivors of domestic violence, mental illness and sexual abuse #anzacday.”

Deveny is suggesting that;

* ANZAC Day is overly glorified and less of a remembrance day than a day of celebrating and getting trashed. Agree?

* ANZAC Day is a welcome distraction for politicians who are slashing the guts out education, health, transport etc and finding new and inventive ways to ensure you continue to be oppressed. Agree?

* As a nation we glorify war and we pay absolutely zero attention to survivors of domestic violence, mental illness and sexual abuse. Agree?

Here is the backlash. Screenshots taken from here

    • Listen to what she says rather than the manner in which she says it.

Dear old Bernie Fraser sends the household pets to sleep but he still has relevant and important things to say.

      • Deveny has the mentality and delivery of a 19yo troll. There is a valid criticism of how politicians and others use ANZAC day but the way she does it completely distracts from all the points she makes.

        • No, you’re just letting your confirmation bias get away from you. The QandA episode she was in was a perfect example. You didn’t shriek once and yet people claimed she did and she spoke less than most of the other male guest and yet people thought she spoke the most. These mistakes are down to the viewers own bias and have almost nothing to do with what she says or how she says it and almost everything to do with the fact that she’s not a man.

    • Actually the QandA episode she appeared on where she was accused of ‘shrieking’ – she actually registered a lower average decibel level than the other guests.

      • That is part of the perceptions some have of women in the public spotlight. Julia Gillard also gets accused of “shrieking” when she is putting her point of view across forcefully as in her Misogyny speech to parliament. Men can yell &,shout over the top of others to their heart’s content but they do not get accused of shrieking.

  1. Words fail me. That these disgraceful, despicable people vote is a thought which makes me feel ill. Even Abbott would surely be appalled that many of these vile idiots are, proudly, his supporters.

  2. I don’t actually see where Deveny has explicitly stated that she doesn’t appreciate or feel grateful for the sacrifices made by our military. She merely has (pretty legitimate) contentions to the cultural significance of the holiday and the way it’s perceived in comparison to many other facets of our society. I think she’s proved quite adequately that misogyny runs rife through this culture, dare you say anything about ANZAC day that isn’t mindless and thoughtless praise.

    • Well. she did say in 2010 that “Anzac Day. Men only enlisted to fight for the money, for the adventure or because they were racist”.

Now this is complete bullshit, I know my Grandad enlisted to stop a man who invaded and conquered most of mainland Europe and was committing an active genocide and to stop the Japanese from continuing to genocide the Chinese.

My best friend joined the army as a civil engineer so that he could go to Afghanistan and East Timor to help them rebuild things, roads, homes, hospitals ect and the army provide the best way for him to do this. He didn’t join the army to make good money, he can have a better adventure just working for any of the global mining or oil companies and he sure as hell is not a racist.

I will criticize Catherine in the exact same way as I criticizes those Neo Nazis that claim that my Grandad changed his mind to supporting the Nazies later in life. They are scum and I refuse to acknowledge them. I refuse to participate in funding a person that insults the memory of my Grandad, and my friends that joined the army during my life, so I ignore her, refuse to go to her shows or purchase. If she wants to insult my family and friends, she has the right to, but I, and everyone has the right to ignore her.

  3. I wonder how many of these pathetic excuses of human excrement know what ANZAC stands for (one called it ANZAZ) or think it was a heroic victory for the Australians, with no one else there.

  4. I’m not quite sure I agree with what she said, but I understand where she’s coming from. Nobody, regardless of how unpopular or controversial their opinion may be, deserves this kind of abuse.

Unfortunately this kind of misogyny is quite common, especially on the Internet, and when you give relatively normal people the ability to act out in front of a large crowd on Facebook, they’ll show you their worst side every time.

  5. Obviously all of these bronzed heroes missed the bit about freedom of speech and expression and that ANZAC symbolises, at least for me, the good fight against intolerance, oppression and rampant militarism. Threatening to kill and rape someone over their opinion would seem to put you in the trenches opposing the Australians, not in their camp.

  6. I know I’m not allowed to hold a different opinion because I’m a black bastard and should fuck off home but now even Anglo Saxons are told to leave.

They should all be given a quiz: where was the first ever 8 hour day won by workers? They may also benefit from reading Marilyn Lake’s book about ANZAC Day.

    • Oh the bogots want everyone to leave who disagrees with them, no matter the colour of their skin, gender, sexuality, beliefs, or religion, and oppose all opinions separate from their own. It’s just those with darker skins are more identifiably “Un-uhstrayan”

      • It is staggering that these brain dead bigots forget they are all descended from migrants or they themselves are migrants. So they should all go back to where they came from.

Ironically, the only “Orstrayans” who aren’t migrants but are original inhabitants, are another group these mindless obscenities are very fond of viciously vilifying.

  7. If it was for freedom your forefathers fought for and that’s what I understand they are honouring them for on ANZAC day, the freedom of speech and right to question the way this day is celebrated should be part of it. With these disgusting reactions and attacks on her person in full rejection of this liberty those “patriotic defenders” of ANZAC day are insulting everything those men fought for. Appalling.

  8. Since wen is Deveny above the law of everyone else? Maybe if they had spoken to her closer to her own level, calling her a rapist and a c*nt as she calls others.. You’d all be calling them intelligent too…

    Idiots.

  9. You reap what you sow Scott, If you use vile language you will receive vile language back. SHIT attracts SHIT. Its simple as that. & its very OBVIOUS that CD & her small minded followers DON’T & WILL NOT ever know about the cultural importance of ANZAC day. YOU will always think the same way about it, there is no point to convince, because that’s who you all are ignorant with NO honour or respect.

      • Am I? Sorry NOT me. I just dont agree with her opinion & think she is a disgusting person. That is all. & Its funny how people say what the diggers fought for in one hand & support CD for calling them rapists on the other.

  10. Deveny calls Tony Abbott a c*nt , calls children sl*ts, calls for child sex on an 11 year old child, abuses war hero’s calling them rapists, wishes cancer (death) on someone, ridicules the disabled… and no one else may say anything.. this is the actual argument put forward. They’re nuts, just a small & loud group of extremists.

  11. Hmm Micheal, you mean she back peddled to try and cover her Bindi slur, as she is back peddling to say her sadistic rape taunts of ANZAC is political comment.. and it doesn’t work. It is hate speech..

  12. Like we say.. sick of her back peddles. What was that actual tweet? ‘I do hope Bindi gets laid’ or something like that? Gloss it over how ever you wish.. Mainstream Australia finds her abuse of innocent people revolting.
