SERCO: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

Serco maintains Strayan values by withholding Christmas presents from asylum seekers' kids

From the NT News:

Soon after that story surfaced, we read this in the Sydney Morning Herald:

SMH asylum seekers

Source
We have an in-principle objection to the out-sourcing of any custodial/human services to the private for-profit sector. One reason is because of the lack of public accountability. Another is the bad track record these companies have in their treatment of those unfortunate enough to come under their jurisdiction, as well as their poor record in the welfare of their own staff.

Remember SERCO’s regrettable predecessors GSL (now GS4)? And Australian Correctional Management ?

These characters change their names like ordinary humans change their socks.

EXCLUSIVE: Our Contract With Serco

If the Government persists for political reasons in wanting to jail asylum seekers, perhaps they should take full responsibility and own their decision. After all, if they are so keen on handing security over to private businesses, then perhaps they’ll next flog off the AFP and the ADF to big business.

Oh wait…

  1. I’ve worked with SERCO in a different industry and found their business model to be to employ the cheapest, least qualified people available and throw them in the deep end. This doesn’t surprise me.

    • Greg… I work for Serco Immigration Services and I have over 20 years experiance in my chosen field and get paid a package that equates $197,000 per year to do my job. I bet 6 other people who all applied for the same job and I was chosen because i was the most experianced and as such I was able to negotiate a higher salary than was originally offered. How does that fit into your “model to be to employ the cheapest, least qualified people available”?

      • Well it’s a shame that if you and others are indeed so experienced in incarcerating people who have committed no crime that you are doing such a lousy job. And I’m sure “James Perenty” who says he works for your lot would recommend a hearty dose of Zyklon B in a fake shower.

      • John, I was just commenting on my limited personal experience of dealing with SERCO rather than offering a critique of your personal performance.

I’m sure you’re great at your job and are worth every one of the $197,000 you get each year.

    • Sound logic James.

Have you ever noticed that, like, you’re so smart, like, and the rest of the world is, like, so dumb?

      Why is that?

  2. It’s very sound logic, I work for SERCO and I can assure you the policy towards muslim detainees won’t be changing, so get over it.

    • If you hadn’t noticed, there is an inquiry into mandatory detention right now, as we speak. so we don’t have to get used to a policy we object to,james. if serco doesn’t want to change their treatment of musim detainees, the government, under pressure from the public, may choose to no longer use serco for their detentipn centres.

and if it didn’t occur to you as you read this article (who am i kidding? a naxi reading-that’ll be the day) serco has changed their policy. they originally didn’t let presents in then they did, and the dickhead who said the kids don’t deserve presents got the sack.

but keep on imagining scum like you are safe.rest assured, either serco will change itself and lose scum like you, or the government will change it. either way, scum like you are out of ajob.

    • We know that there are many clueless knobs in the security industry – this is an ongoing and long-standing problem which greatly concerns law enforcement officials at both the state and federal level, as well as those in the security industry who do do the right thing.

      Prove you work for Serco.

  3. I can understand the textas and crayons bit, just. But I thought SERCO were supposed to be the big Uber company and the mega experienced security firm. Surely to hell such a great, wonderous and incredibly awesome firm would have SOME way to detect contraband in wrapped presents.

I mean it’s not like they were wrapped in lead foil or something like that, right? Oh Noes, foiled again…

    • We’re a really good security firm. None of the criminals we hold in our detention centres have escaped yet. And before you say they aren’t criminals, don’t bother. They entered the country illegally. Do you understand ?

  4. Oh and James, old son… How in the name of any deity you care to name are Muslims supposed to ‘assimilate’ like everyone seems to be asking them if the clowns running the show wont even let them be exposed to the ‘Great Australian Traditions’, one of which is the handing out of presents on Christmas Day?

Sounds suspiciously like a stacked deck to me. But of course no-one would be that mean and crude? Noooooo never.

  5. it already has, you fool! serco has not been the only organisation involved in the detention centres, has it? now, do you think the workers at those other organisations thought they were going to lose the contract, or like you, did they think they were untouchable, and were going to be there forever?

gsl has come and gone. australian correctional management has come and gone. what makes you and serco any different? ask yourself that, then discuss whether a neo-nazi has long term job prospects in a company needing to lose staff.

and you’re overlooking the change already occurring. both the government and the opposition want fewer detention centres. they want to do it through offshore processing, but as legality is quashing any hope of that, they’re instead moving to community detention. already happening, right now. the more it happens, the smaller sercos role is, and the less you are needed.

that is, of course if you actually work for serco, and not the more likely result of you’re on the dole, living in your mum’s basement, because she’s the only one who can tolerate you.

  6. grow a brain james i also work for serco who i believe have good intentions i my self do not believe i am under trained or under qualified…. i do how ever see the good and bad and JAMES MY FRIEND IF YOU DO INDEED WORK FOR SERCO PLEASE DONT EVER COME ACROSS MY LINE I WILL REPORT YOU IN A SECOND “THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS ” FOR FUCK SAKE SO I HAVE A WEALFARE BACK GROUND AND NOT A SECURITY ONE…. I STILL BELIEVE SERCO ARE TRUELY TRYING TO CHANGE THE PAST OF G4S ETC AND ARE NOT PERFECT THERE ARE THINGS THAT STILL NEED TO CHANGE AS FOR THE GuY THAT GOT THE SACK HIS NAME WAS KEN I BELIEVE AND IF YOU HAD READ THE COMMENTS NOT JUST WHAT WAS READ IN THE PAPER YOU WOULD SEE THE POINT HE WAS TRYING TO MAKE WAS THEY GOT THE PRESENTS IT MAY HAVE BEEN LATE BUT THEY GOT THEM…… AND THAT THERE WERE BIGGER ISSUES LIKE TEACHING CULTURES THAT DE VALUE WOMEN THAT IT IS NOT OK IN AUSTRALIA IT IS THE BIGGER PICTURE…. and i would just like to reiterate that the views james clearly shares on this blog are not the views of all serco employees
