First of all – TAB admin do NOT in any way condone the actions of the few detainees that set fire to buildings within the Villawood Detention Centre. Let that be perfectly clear. Violence doesn’t get anyone anywhere, and as Prime Minister Gillard stated, it will probably lessen their chances of obtaining Visas in our country now. And we agree.
But…
For the purpose of this exercise, place yourselves in the shoes of an asylum seeker. You’ve had to flee your country because your country is under attack from militant forces, or it’s being bombed by Western forces attacking ‘terrorism’. The ones that are lucky enough to escape being killed in their own countries come here and land in detention centres. And it is there that they stay, under suspicion of being terrorists themselves for years at a time. The detainees that rioted at Villawood have been there for two years. And rather than oppose their actions, we’ve got so-called decent Australians calling for them to be murdered, shot, burned, put on leaky boats and sunk. Their assumption is that these people had it made. That these people had wonderful lives at Villawood where they had everything they wanted and needed. And that these people were all Muslims and all terrorists. So therefore, it’s only logical, rational and reasonable that we kill these people as though it’s sport. And although there are born-and-raised-here Aussies burning houses and killing people and raping women and children and stealing and bashing elderly citizens, they don’t deserve an ounce of our attention.
There are over 400 detainees at Villawood. According to Immigration Minister Chris Bowen, the handful of refugees that started it all had already had their applications rejected. Note that this is unconfirmed at this stage. Brami Jegan from the Refugee Action Centre believes that the night of rioting was an act of desperation – a cry out for help. When you’ve been locked up in a foreign country for two years, it has obvious psychological effects. We cannot simply assume that refugees are terrorists or criminals. They are escaping atrocities, and while it is of the utmost importance to apply character tests and necessary background and health checks, locking them in detention centres for years at a time is simply inhumane. And while they’re stuck in there, they’re constantly being threatened with being sent back to almost certain death. “They’ve got to the point now where they’re like, what are we even doing here, we’re just in prison, in indefinite prison in your country.” said Brami Jegan.
So where is the compassion and the understanding? Are these failures to be blamed on a handful of out-of-control stir-crazy detainees, or on a broader problem of endless mandatory detention and institutionalised racism?

Being found a refugee means meeting the definition of a refugee as outlined in the UNHCR Guidelines on Refugee Status. You can seek asylum and have that denied…. which is what it sounds like these desperate individuals have had happen to them.
The trick is that asylum seeker and refugee are used almost interchangeably by both government and media.
In any case if someone enters australian waters seeking asylum then, my understanding is, we must determine their status one way or the other. We cannot turn them back.

I would like to express my concerns about the current situation with muslim Asylum Seekers/ Refugees/ illegal immigrants.
I am a Vietnam veteran and fought for Australia. I went to war when my country asked me without question and I am proud to say I am Australian who loves my country. I am a member of the Frankston RSL club with the largest membership in Victoria and visit on a regular occasion to talk to my friends. All the people I talk to have the same view as I do on the muslim people coming into our country.
This email will be put on the notice board and everyone’s attention will be brought to it as they enter the RSL. Your response will also be put on the notice board. The RSL has over 3,000 members.
I will also sent this to everyone that I have their email address and ask them to pass it on to all the other people they know. I guess this will get to approx 7 to 8,000 people. Maybe more.
Therefore I ask for real answers to my questions.
I have lived in the Philippines and Thailand and understand what the muslims are trying to do in the southern parts of those countries.
They are trying to get their own Islamic states and want to live under their own laws and rules. They are killing everyone that stands in their way. Men, women and children and even babies.
In Thailand they are killing all the teachers and burning down the schools to force the kids to attend Islamic schools so they can covert them to Islamic/muslim.
This is already happening in Australia where the Government and other authorities are changing the rules to suit the muslims.
Take Dandenong area for example, the kindergartens and pre schools now do not celebrate Christmas, Easter and other world Christian events because all muslims there would be offended. Therefore the Australian kids are being decimated against in there own country. THIS IS AUSTRALIA not some other muslim country.
Another example is a school in Coburg were having a school BBQ and the few muslim women on the committee ordered only halal meat. Therefore the Australian kid had to miss out on the BBQ or eat muslim meat. Your Centre Link and other government departments are banning Christmas decorations and the worst disgrace is that these Government Departments are stoping their staff observing the minute silence on the 11 of November. How dare your department’s heads instruct their staff in this way. These are all to suit the muslims that hate our country and our way of life here.
This is decimation against Australians and kids, which is a real disgrace.
Another stupid thing your Government has done is bringing the Sudanese to Australia. This is a Christian country however your Government has accepted the refugees from the northern Sudan, which are muslim, and not from the south which are Christian. How stupid. People smuggling around the world is a very serious offence, however your Government welcomes it.
My suggestion,
When the boats come here, have the captain and crew charged and jailed for people smuggling. A long jail sentence of 7 to 10 years as this will be a deterrent to other people smugglers.
Then fly the boat people back to their own country. We spend over $400 million to build the detention centre on Christmas Island and many millions in keeping them and giving them things that many Australian can only dream about. The muslims destroy the centre on a regular basis, which costs us taxpayers many millions of dollars to repair it. Then we repair it again and again.
Now your government is going to build another near Darwin at cost of over 90 million and 70 million to run it per year. Is this a joke on us taxpayers?

It was both, Jo. Tell me – how much respect would you have after being locked up indefinitely (well, for at least two years) in a detention centre, in a country that is supposedly a signatory on the 1951 UN Refugee Convention? These asylum seekers are often separated from their families, suffering mentally after escaping tyrannical countries and weeks floating around on dangerous waters on leaky boats. They ARE desperate and confused and angry and scared. And you are clearly lacking compassion and understanding.

If you want to work in a school, it takes a week to do a background check. If you want to give blood, it takes a day to do a health background check. If you want to travel, it takes a few hours to do a character assessment. If you are fleeing a country where there is a war going on, it takes a few minutes to assess whether or not the country is safe to return to. The whole process of determining whether an asylum seeker is fit to be recognised as a refugee shouldn’t take more than a few weeks – months – AT THE MOST. And the more humane option is to do the basic checks and then allow the asylum seeker into the community with a restriction on travel, and a mandatory reporting system where they need to check in each day – in the same way released criminals on parole are treated. Consider the amount of money saved, and the humanitarian improvements.

I’m sick to death of “real Aussies” bitching about immigrants and refugees refusing to “adapt” to “Australian” culture when half these idiots don’t even want to learn something so simple as a definition.
I certainly don’t pretend to understand the processing system, and have only empathy for people who have to see their children grow up in these places as they spend years on end there, but I know a girl from Laos who was in a detention centre for three years before being admitted citizenship. She says that, although the conditions were often cramped, it wasn’t the prison-like experience as sometimes described. She was safe, fed, given entertainment, phone privileges, internet, and says that her time there was much preferable to the what she was escaping as a refugee – that having to wait several years and prove herself worth of admission was a small price to pay to live here.
I don’t agree with these assholes whatsoever, but I can to some extent understand the lack of empathy many have – the government do not properly educate the public on the practices of detention centers, and the media portrays them in harsh light that panders to bogans, which I find abhorrent.
That’s one example…compared to the hundred of examples where asylum seekers either currently in detention or refugees out of detention or those who have been rejected altogether talk about the awful conditions in the detention centres. You can’t just hang on to one example and say “Okay, the conditions are fine so there’s no reason for them to complain.” and then say lack of empathy is okay. And anyway, the conditions aren’t really the main issue. The main issue is the compulsory detention and how long it lasts. These people go from war and oppression, barely escape and often have family and friends who have been imprisoned and killed in those conditions, often are in difficult conditions travelling here, and then get put in prison-like fenced in centres for at least two years (which is often more than two years and the length of time hasn’t been determined). It would be frustrating beyond any level of frustration I (and probably you) would have ever experienced. Australia is the only country with mandatory detention for asylum seekers (both adults and children). We get way smaller number of asylum seekers than a number of other countries do, especially compared to our population and the size of the land, and people go on about the country being too full (while at the same time being encouraged to have heaps of babies). I would be pretty pissed off if I were in that situation. I’m not saying starting fires is a good idea but the anger is totally understandable.
